Kent is home to a no less than 10 Blue Flag beaches, an award that recognises beaches from across the world for their cleanliness, facilities, and water quality.

Whether you are a local or you are visiting Kent for the first time, taking a road trip to some of the Blue Flag beaches is an absolute must.

  1. Tankerton

Located in the North of the county, just a short drive from Whitstable and Herne Bay and only 8 miles out of Canterbury lies Tankerton. It’s easy to access from Canterbury and those travelling from London can use the A2 and M2. The beach itself is old fashioned with coloured beach huts with plenty of greenery for children to enjoy.

  1. Sheerness Beach

Sheerness Beach is located on the Northern coast of the Isle of Sheppey. The Isle of Sheppey is accessed via the A249, where the M2 meets Sittingbourne Road. Sittingbourne is just 10 miles away, making it the ideal place to visit if you’re staying in or around Sittingbourne.

The beach itself is mainly shingle and is a popular location for crabbing. The promenade is perfect for those looking to have a short stroll or a cycle along the beach, taking in the views.

  1. Minster Leas

Minster Leas is also located on the North Coast of the Isle of Sheppey, just a stone’s throw away from Sheerness Beach, so ideal for those who want to visit multiple locations in one trip.

Because it is located so close to Sheerness Beach, you can walk or cycle between the two beaches to take in the coastal sights as you go.

  1. Minnis Bay
  2. Minnis Bay

Located west of Margate, Minnis Bay is a small, quiet location for those who want to enjoy a more peaceful beach experience. Getting to Mannis Bay is quite easy, via the M2 and A299 from London or Sittingbourne direction, A28 from Canterbury or A256 from Sandwich and Dover direction.

Located just a short walk away from Minnis Bay, West Bay is also popular with those looking for a quiet location to enjoy the views. It’s also just a short drive down the road from Margate, so ideal for those who are staying in that area, to get out and visit somewhere different.

  1. St Mildred’s

  1. Botany Bay

Located in Thanet, Botany Bay is the perfect place for fossil hunting and exploring rock pools away from the hustle and bustle of tourist beaches. Botany Bay is easily accessible via the A299 or Canterbury as well as Dover.

  1. Margate Main Sands

  1. Stone Bay

Stone Bay is a smaller beach that is perfect for those looking to take a short stroll and take in the scenery. In between Margate and Ramsgate, Stone Bay offers the solace away from the busier towns so ideal for an afternoon out if you’ve visiting these areas.

  1. Westbrook Bay

Another beach located within throwing distance of Margate is Westbrook Bay, a quieter but still populated beach that is on the edge of Royal Esplanade’s Sunken Gardens. This bay is popular with those wanting a quieter area to take a stroll away from the hustle and bustle.

What cars to consider for road trips

If you are thinking of taking regular road trips or staycations, you want a car that will make it a stress-free and enjoyable experience for you and your passengers.

For example, if your passengers are a group of adventurers, you want a car that is going to be able to withstand rough terrain and wear and tear that could occur from muddy boots and heavy sporting equipment, such as the Ford Kuga.

Conversely, if you will be travelling solo, you won’t likely need anything bigger than a compact hatchback such as a Ford Fiesta, which can switch seamlessly between city driving and weekend adventures.

Here at County Garage Ford, we’d be happy to help you find the perfect car for road trips and staycations.
